Where McConnell Sits and the Roads Around It

McConnell Air Force Base is off South Rock Road in southeast Wichita. Most calls in this part of town come from a handful of roads:

The neighborhoods around the base include Planeview and Oaklawn, with Derby a few miles south.

6 Things to Know About Towing Near McConnell AFB

1. Say “on base” or “off base” first

A breakdown on Rock Road outside the gate is a normal tow. A car in base housing or a dorm lot is not, because the truck has to get through the gate. Lead with that detail so the dispatcher can plan for it.

2. A tow truck needs base access like any other visitor

A civilian tow truck cannot just drive onto the base. The McConnell AFB base access FAQ says contractors and vendors must be sponsored through the West Gate at Building 61. The driver has to show a current vehicle registration, an insurance card and a driver’s license. Company vehicles are inspected at the West Gate before they enter.

That means you, as the person on base, are the sponsor. Start the access request before the truck leaves our yard. The base lists the Visitor Control Center at 316-759-4712 and the Base Operator at 316-759-6100. Ask them what they need for a tow truck that day.

3. Know your gate

The base FAQ lists two main entrances:

Gate hours and rules can change. Confirm with the Visitor Control Center before you send anyone to a gate.

4. Have your documents ready

You will need your ID at the gate and proof the car is yours when the truck arrives. Keep your registration and insurance card where you can reach them. If the car ends up at a tow yard later, the same registration and a photo ID are what get it released.

5. Servicemembers have extra protection on storage liens

In Kansas, a tow company has a lien on a vehicle for unpaid towing and storage, and an unclaimed car can be sold after the notice steps in state law. Federal law adds a layer for people in uniform. Under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, 50 U.S.C. 3958, a lien holder cannot enforce a storage lien on a servicemember’s property during military service, or for 90 days after, without a court order.

If your car was towed while you were deployed or away on orders, call the tow yard, tell them you are on active duty, and contact the base legal office. Our guide on how long a tow company can keep your car in Kansas explains the state timeline.

6. Plan ahead for a PCS or a deployment

A car that does not run is a problem when orders come. We can move it to a shop, a storage lot, a family member’s driveway, or another city. See long distance towing for moves out of town and how to schedule a tow to book a time that fits your out processing.

Common Calls Across Southeast Wichita

Most towing near McConnell AFB falls into one of these five kinds of calls.

Where What happens What usually fixes it
Rock Road outside the East Gate Breakdown or fender bender in commuter traffic Tow to a shop or to the driveway
K-15 toward Derby Flat tire, stall or crash at highway speed Flatbed tow off the shoulder
Base housing and dorm lots Car that will not start or has sat for months Jump start, or a flatbed with a winch
Store lots near Kellogg and Rock Road Dead battery after shopping Jump start on the spot
Turnpike ramps at K-15 and Kellogg Breakdown on the toll road Call *KTA (*582) first, then a tow

A car that has sat through a deployment often needs a winch to load. A flatbed handles that.

If You Break Down Outside the Gate

  1. Turn on your hazard lights and get as far off the road as you can.
  2. Stay out of the gate lanes. If the car died in a gate lane, tell the gate guard right away.
  3. On K-15 or Kellogg, stay buckled in. Kansas drivers must move over or slow down for any stopped car with flashing lights.
  4. Call us with the cross street, your direction of travel and what the car is doing.
  5. If you are late for duty, call your supervisor while you wait. Ask for a receipt with the time on it.

Do not leave a dead car on a highway shoulder for days. Under K.S.A. 8-1102, a vehicle left on a highway for more than 48 hours can be towed by law enforcement.
