What Wichita Law Requires Before a Tow
Private towing in Wichita follows City Code Chapter 11.99. Here’s what property owners need to have in place.
1. Signs at Every Entrance
Each driveway or curb cut into your lot needs a sign within 5 feet of the public right of way. The sign must say unauthorized parking is prohibited, in letters at least 1.5 inches tall. It must also say unauthorized vehicles will be towed at the owner’s expense, in letters at least 1 inch tall (City of Wichita).
2. A Report to WPD Within One Hour
After a vehicle is towed, the person who asked for the tow must report it to the Wichita Police Records Bureau within one hour. The report includes the make, model, year, VIN, plate, where the car went, who ordered the tow, and the address it was towed from (Wichita City Code 11.99.030). Our driver gathers all of that for you on every tow.
3. Fees Within the City Cap
Wichita limits what a tow company can charge the vehicle owner for a private property tow. The caps started in 2023 at $120 for the tow, $4.70 per mile, and $36 per day of storage. They go up 4% each June beginning in 2024 (Wichita Ordinance 52-047). That puts 2026 caps at roughly:
The same ordinance requires an itemized bill for every vehicle owner.
Can I Tow a Car Parked in Front of My House?
Not if it’s on the street. The street is public, and private tow rules don’t apply there.
Car Blocking Your Driveway From the Street
Call the Wichita Police non-emergency line.
Car Abandoned on the Street
Officers can tag it with a green impound sticker and tow it after 48 hours (WPD Policy 404).
Car in Your Private Driveway or Yard
If it’s parked there without permission, that’s private property. Call us at (316) 351-4754.
Abandoned Vehicles on Your Property
Some cars sit for weeks. The owner may have moved out, lost their job, or ended up in the hospital or the Sedgwick County jail on Elm Street. Kansas drivers on Reddit point out that many abandoned cars belong to people who were arrested.
You still have options:
1. Make Sure Your Signs Meet the Rules
Check every entrance against the sign rules above.
2. Call Us
We tow the vehicle to our yard at 4309 S Broadway.
3. We Handle the Paperwork
Under Kansas law, if we know who owns the vehicle, we must notify them within 15 days that it’s being held (Kansas Department of Revenue).
4. If It's Never Claimed
State law sets out a notice and sale process for unclaimed vehicles under K.S.A. 8-1102 and 8-1103. You don’t have to chase down the owner or pay to have the car hauled away.
How Our Private Property Tows Work
Every account and every tow follows the same steps, so your lot stays clear and every tow holds up.
1. Set Up an Account
We meet with you, walk the lot, and agree on who can authorize tows: the manager, the HOA board, or a security company.
2. Check Signs
We look at every entrance. If a sign is missing or the letters are too small, we tell you before we tow anything.
3. You Call, We Come
Day or night. Tell dispatch the lot address and where the car is parked.
4. We Document It
Photos of the vehicle, the parking spot, and the nearest sign, plus the time stamp.
5. We Tow and Report
The car goes to our yard, and the WPD report is made within the one-hour window.
If Your Car Was Towed From a Private Lot
Here is how to get your car back as quickly as possible.
1. Find Out Who Has It
The tow company’s name and phone number should be on the sign at the lot entrance. You can also check the City’s FindMyCar search.
2. Bring Your ID and Current Registration
Those are the two documents the WPD Records Bureau lists for getting a vehicle released (WPD Policy 404).
3. Check Your Bill
It should be itemized and stay within the City caps listed above.
4. Ask About Your Belongings
Call us to set a time to get personal items out of the car. You can pay by cash or card.

What Wichita Drivers Say About Miller's
Miller’s Towing & Recovery has more than 300 Google reviews from local drivers and businesses. Customers keep mentioning friendly drivers, kind staff, and careful handling of their vehicles.
"Driver was friendly and tow truck and equipment was clean and well maintained."
How much does it cost to tow a car from private property in Wichita?
Nothing for the property owner. The vehicle owner pays a capped fee set by City ordinance: about $135 for the tow in 2026, plus mileage and daily storage.
What are the Kansas laws on abandoned vehicles on private property?
In Wichita, posted signs allow towing. Kansas law then requires the tow company to notify the vehicle owner within 15 days, and sets a notice and sale process if the vehicle is never claimed.
Do I need signs to tow from my lot?
Yes. Wichita requires a sign at every vehicle entrance with specific wording and letter sizes.
Can my HOA tow cars?
Yes, from HOA-owned private lots and roads, with proper signs. Public streets in your neighborhood are handled by WPD.
Who reports the tow to police?
The person who requested the tow is responsible under City Code 11.99. Our driver collects every required detail so that report gets made on time.
