First Five Minutes After a Crash
What you do right after a wreck protects your safety, your claim, and your wallet. Here is the order we tell every caller.
1. Check for Injuries and Call 911
Kansas law requires a police report when a crash causes injury, death, or $1,000 or more in damage (Kansas Insurance Department).
2. Get Out of Traffic If You Can
If the car still moves and nobody is hurt, pull onto the shoulder or into a lot. On Kellogg or I-135, stay buckled in if it’s not safe to step out.
3. Turn On Your Hazards
As of 2025, Kansas drivers must move over or slow down for any stopped vehicle with flashing hazards, not just police and tow trucks (KOAM).
4. Take Photos
Get both cars, the plates, the road, and any skid marks before anything gets moved.
5. Call Us, or Tell the Officer You Want Miller's
Call (316) 351-4754 any hour. If an officer is on scene, ask for Miller’s by name and we’ll head your way.
You Pick the Tow Company, Not the Rotation List
A lot of Wichita drivers don’t know this. Under Wichita Police Department Policy 404, if your car needs a tow but isn’t being impounded, you can ask for the tow company you want (WPD Policy 404).
If You Ask for Miller's
The company you choose has to arrive within 45 minutes and clear the debris from the street. When you choose us, you hear our rates up front, and we take the car where you want it.
If You Don't Choose
Dispatch calls the next company on the City’s emergency rotation list. That choice matters for your wallet. Wichita drivers on Reddit have posted rotation tow bills of $544 and more once storage was added.
What Counts as a Recovery?
Not every tow is a recovery. Here’s the difference, and the kind of jobs our crews take on.
Regular Tow or Recovery?
A regular tow means the car is on a flat surface, ready to load. A recovery is everything else. The City of Wichita treats uprighting a vehicle, winching it more than 30 feet, or pulling it out of water as specialized towing (City of Wichita fee schedule).
Recovery Work Our Crews Handle
- Crash scenes: Cars with locked wheels, bent suspension, or no front end.
- Roll overs: Uprighting the vehicle slowly so the roof and glass don’t take more damage.
- Ditch and median slides: Common on K-96 and the county roads after ice storms. See our winching service.
- Off road: Pulling vehicles out of mud along the Big Ditch and from soft shoulders on K-42.
- Parking lot damage: Hit and runs at Towne East, Towne West, and apartment lots.
What Our Crew Does on Scene
Every accident recovery follows the same steps.
1. Light Up the Scene
We park to shield you from traffic and turn on our warning lights.
2. Walk the Vehicle
We look for leaks, loose parts, and the safest spots to attach, using the frame or tow points, never the bumper.
3. Load It Right
Most wrecked cars go on the flatbed. If a wheel won’t turn, we use dollies or skates.
4. Clean Up
We sweep glass and plastic and spread oil dry on fluids. City rules require tow crews to clear debris before leaving.
5. Secure Your Stuff
If a window is broken, we tarp the car so rain and dust stay out.
6. Drop It Where You Choose
Your body shop, dealer, home, or our yard on South Broadway.

What Accident Recovery Costs in Wichita
Every company on the City’s emergency tow list publishes its rates. Here are Miller’s posted 2026 rates for light duty vehicles (City of Wichita).
Most companies on the list charge $150 for a light duty tow, and storage runs $50 to $75 a day.
How to Keep Your Bill Down
- Move it fast. Storage adds up every day. Have us take the car straight to your body shop or home if you can.
- Call your insurance company right away. Collision coverage and roadside coverage often pay for the tow.
- Pick a close drop off. Shorter trips mean fewer miles on the bill.
If Your Car Was Impounded After an Arrest
If you’re released from the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility at 141 W. Elm and your car was towed, go straight to the tow company that has it. You’ll need a photo ID and proof of current registration.
If you think the tow wasn’t valid, you can ask for a hearing at City Hall, 455 N. Main, within five business days. Under the same policy, officers can sometimes release the car to a sober passenger or leave it if it’s legally parked. Ask before it gets hooked (WPD Policy 404).
Police Reports and Insurance
- Non-injury crashes: You can file an insurance report online with the City of Wichita, as long as there was no hit and run or DUI (City of Wichita).
- Our records: We note the time, location, and condition of your car when we load it, which helps your claim.
- Belongings: Call us to set a time to pick up your things from our yard.
