6 Things to Know About Towing on K-254
1. Your location is a crossroad or a mile marker
There are long stretches with no buildings. Look for the green mile marker posts on the right shoulder, or name the last crossroad you passed: Rock Road, Webb Road, Greenwich Road, the Benton turnoff or the Towanda turnoff. Add your direction, east toward El Dorado or west toward Wichita. With a divided highway, the direction decides which side the truck has to reach.
2. The east half has crossing traffic
On the freeway part near Kechi, traffic enters and leaves by ramps. East of there, cars and trucks cross the highway and turn onto it at grade. A disabled car near one of those crossroads is harder for other drivers to see around. If the car still rolls, get it past the intersection and well onto the shoulder.
3. The state is studying a new interchange
The crossroads east of Kechi have been a safety concern for years. KWCH reported that the Kansas Department of Transportation held an open house on February 5, 2026, about a possible new interchange in the Rock Road, Webb Road and Greenwich Road area, and took public comment through February 19. One resident told the station all three crossings are bad for traffic and safety. Until something is built, treat those crossings with care, and more so if you are stopped near one.
4. Farm equipment and deer share this road
K-254 runs through farm ground in both counties. In the same KWCH story, a farmer said getting equipment across the highway is almost impossible. Slow machinery at harvest and deer at dawn and dusk are both part of driving here. If you hit a deer, read what to do after hitting a deer in Kansas.
5. Know who to call
- 911: for a crash, an injury or a car blocking a lane.
- *47: reaches the Kansas Highway Patrol from a cell phone for a stalled car that is not an emergency.
- A tow company: once you are safe. You can pick your own.
6. Hazard lights and the 48 hour clock
Turn on your hazard lights and stay buckled in if you are close to traffic. Kansas drivers must move over or slow down for any stopped vehicle with flashing lights. KAKE covered that change to the Move Over law in 2025.
Do not leave the car for days. Under K.S.A. 8-1102, a vehicle left on a highway for more than 48 hours can be removed by law enforcement, and the owner pays the tow and storage.

Where Your Car Can Go
You choose the drop off. On this highway, the choice affects the price, because mileage is charged both for how far the car is carried and, with some companies, for how far the truck has to come. Ask how mileage is counted when you call.
- A Wichita shop or dealer: the most common choice for commuters who live in town.
- Home: in Kechi, Bel Aire, Benton, Towanda or El Dorado.
- A shop in El Dorado: closer if you broke down on the east half.
- Our yard: 4309 S Broadway in Wichita, if you need time to decide. Ask about storage first.
We have pages for Kechi, Bel Aire and El Dorado. If your trip continues on the toll road, read our Kansas Turnpike breakdown guide.
